Tom Baker
1974 - 1982

Baker was born in 1934 was raised in Scotland Road area of Liverpool. After leaving school, Baker joined a monastic order called the Brothers of Ploermel, later moving to Shropshire in England as a novitiate. For six years he followed the monastic life until he decided at age twenty-one that it wasn't the life for him. He obtained a scholarship and enrolled at the Rose Bruford Drama School in London. Afterwards he read poetry in a Soho coffee bar called the Parisian and toward the end of the fifties he began to work in repertory companies around Britain. In the late sixties, he got his first break when he was spotted and offered a job with the company. In 1968 he made his television debut in an episode of Dixon of Dock Green. Soon followed by roles in series including Market in Honey Lane, George and the Dragon, and Softly, Softly: Task Force. By then his role in big-screen Shakespeare's A Winter's Tale which was shot in 1966 finally came out in 1968. Baker's most famous role came in 1970 when he played Rasputin in Nicholas and Alexandra. Other film work in the early seventies are Pasolini's The Canterbury Tales, Vault of Horror, and The Golden Voyage of Sinbad. It was his role in The Golden Voyage of Sinbad that Barry Letts chose him to succeed Jon Pertwee in Doctor Who.
