Paul McGann
1996

McGann was born in Surrey in 1959 but grew up in Liverpool after his family moved there when he was a child. He began his acting career in the theatre before moving onto film and television work. In 1985 he had a big break when he took the lead role of Percy Toplis in the BBC's production of Alan Bleasdale's The Monocled Mutineer. Two years later he was one of the stars in Withnail and I. In 1992 his most notable role came from Twentieth Century Fox's Alien 3. Misfortune followed when a knee injury force him to give up the lead in Sharpe saga. From there he landed a part in The Three Musketeers and in 1995, The Hanging Gale and The One That Got Away. He was always Philip Segal's first choice to play the eighth Doctor and eventually McGann came around to the idea.
