Colin Baker
1984 - 1987

Baker was born in 1943 and spent his early years with his mother while his father served in the armed forces. After the war, the family moved to Rochdale and he attended school in Manchester. It was here that he had his first experience of acting, taking a small role in a series called My Wife's Sister. Later he attended St Bede's College in Manchester where he participated in annual productions of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. Later he studied law and started out as a solicitor. By this time he has become hooked on acting when he joined the North Manchester Amateur Dramatic Society. By the age of twenty-three he decided to pursue acting as a career professionally. He won a place at London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and trained for three years. Soon he had roles such as The Roads to Freedom (1970), Balzac's Cousin Bette (1971), and Tolstoy's War and Peace (1972-1973). In the mid-seventies, he had a role in BBC1 drama series The Brothers which ended in 1976. His few television roles after this period included Bayban the Berserker Blake's 7 episode City on the Edge of the World (1980) and Commander Maxil in season twenty Doctor Who story Arc of Infinity. Shortly after this due to coincedental circumstance of meeting John Nathan-Turner at a wedding and impressing him with his ability of entertaining the guests led Baker to be invited by Nathan-Turner to play the sixth Doctor. He agreed and was announced by the press in 1983.
